In 1999, the 30th session of the General Conference of UNESCO decided to celebrate World Poetry Day on March 21.
First World Poetry Day was celebrated in Paris, where the headquarters of UNESCO is located.
"Poetry, - says the decision by UNESCO - could be the answer to the most acute and profound spiritual questions of modern man - but it is necessary to bring it to the widest possible public attention.
In addition, World Poetry Day allows to make themselves small publishers, whose efforts reach contemporary poets, literary clubs, regenerating the eternal tradition of live-sounding poetic.
This Day, according to UNESCO, is intended to serve the creation of the media a positive image of poetry as a truly contemporary art, open to people.
