Why is it that people like eating chocolate so much? Chocolate has been popular for centuries. It was first brought back to Europe from South America in the 16th century, but for 300 years it was consumed solely as a drink – it is only in the past 150 years that it has been eaten. There are a lot of possible theories as to why we like chocolate, but the one overriding reason is its taste. Other contributing factors are that it has a melting point just below body temperature, so as soon as it enters the mouth it melts. And chocolate also releases small amount of chemicals in the brain, so as serotonin and phenyl ethylamine, which can give a slight mood lift.
