Why is it that parrots mimic humans?
All birds learn their vocabulary by copying; for instance, a song bird will learn its song by listening to its parents singing. However, birds in captivity, such as parrots, don’t have any other role model, so when humans talks to them, they learn certain phrases because it’s what they are accustomed to – wild parrots don’t mimic humans at all.
Other birds, such as budgerigars and mynas, are also copying birds, but there are some birds that don’t have the ability and so even in captivity they don’t learn to mimic human speech.
