Shopping and souvenirs
Shops in Ukraine work daily from 10.00 to 19.00. But the main trade ground and sight is Ozerka - a medieval market in modern style. There one can find whatever one's soul desires - goods made by local craftsmen, tipple, food, clothes, inexpensive things and much more. Most tourists look out for traditional arts and crafts wares: embroideries, Petrykivka's paintings, various souvenirs made of wood. These are best found in "Handicraft's Walk” in the very centre of the city and also in the Arts Salon nearby.

The main public forms of transport within Dnipropetrovsk are trams, buses, electric trolley buses and marshrutkas—private minibuses. In addition there are large numbers of taxis and many private cars. Bicycles are also in wide use along with an increasing number of motor scooters. Dnipropetrovsk also has a metro system, opened in 1995, which consists of one line and 6 stations. Work on other stations was abandoned in recent times when the city ran out of money for this project; two of these abandoned building works are in the central portion of Karla Marksa Prospekt.
Currently the project has been restarted. Completion of the next two stations is necessary to make the municipal subway system profitable. At the present time there no completion time has been given. Ukrainian cuisine has gained popularity in Russia and beyond. There are various floury products (pampushki, galushki, vareniki and etc.), meat dishes and products (Ukrainian sausages, game, poultry), vegetable and dairy products (ryazhenka, curd fritters). But the most known and loved all over the world is famous Ukrainian borsch. Wide-spread in Ukraine are various kashas (dishes of cooked grain or groats), vareniki filled with curd, mashed potatoes, stewed cabbage, and in summer - with berries. No less popular are such dishes as braised meat with potatoes - so called zharkoye or pechenya, Ukrainian bitki, stuffed with garlic and lard, cold buzhenina - pork stewed with cabbage and fat, kruchenyki and many others. An important place in Ukrainian cuisine belongs to the fish dishes: crucian baked in soured cream, fish kruchenyki, carp stuffed with mushrooms and buckwheat, carp stewed with onion or in soured cream, pike-perch baked with mushro... Currency
Ukrainian currency is hryvna (UAH). Exchange rate is approximately 1 USD=8.0 UAH, 1 EURO=12.0 UAH and it is exposed to insignificant oscillations. The currency can be obtained at exchange points, post-offices, in banks or at the airport. Obtaining currency at exchange points is the most advantageous. There is no commission charge. Don't be tempted by offers of higher exchange rates from individuals you meet next to exchange points or just in the streets, they are swindlers. Hotels, some shops and restaurants accept payment by credit card of basic pay systems, but when traveling over the country it is better to use cash. Cash point machines can be found in all parts of the city, operating rules are like everywhere, there is an English dialogue version. Banks are open from 9.00 till 18.00.

This is a most pleasant and popular park with a big pond, a waterplay fountain in the pond and lots of benches to relax on. But it's also extremely popular with kids because there is a railway line in there. It's not a small toy railway but a real one but smaller in size than a proper one. I wanted to take a ride but I just missed the last train.

The Dnieper is important for the transport and economy of Ukraine: its reservoirs have large ship locks, allowing vessels of up to 270 by 18 metres (890 ft × 59 ft) to access as far as the port of Kyiv and thus create an important transport corridor. The river is used by passenger vessels as well. Inland cruises on the rivers Danube and Dnieper have been a growing market in recent decades.
Upstream from Kyiv, the Dnieper receives the water of the Pripyat River. This navigable river connects to the Dnieper-Bug canal, the link with the Western Bug river. Historically, a connection with the Western European waterways was possible, but a weir without a ship lock near the town of Brest has interrupted this international waterway. Poor political relations between Western Europe and Belarus mean there is little likelihood of re-opening this waterway in the near future.
Navigation is interrupted each year by freezing in winter, and severe ... Read more »

A 1792 plan of Yekaterinoslav. The city that is now called Dnipropetrovsk was founded as part of the expansion of the Russian Empire into the lands North of the Black Sea, known as the Novorossiysk gubernia. The city was originally known as Yekaterinoslav, which translates in English to "The glory of Yekaterina" (Catherine the Great). It became the administrative center of the Yekaterinoslav Governorate. Cossack and Russian armies fought against the Ottoman Empire for control of this area in the Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca ended this war in July 1774; and in May 1775 the Russian army destroyed the Zaporozhian Sich, thus eliminating the political independence of Cossacks. In 1774 Prince Grigori Potemkin was appointed governor of Novorossiysk gubernia, and after the destruction of the Zaporozhian Sich, he started founding cities in the region and encouraging foreign settlers. The city of Yekaterinoslav was fou... Read more »
