The new town was founded in 1776 by Prince Grigory Potemkin by the order of Catherine II and called Ekaterinoslav (it was called so in the years 1776-1926). In 1918 the city was named in honor of Sicheslav Cossack Sich. Since 1926 - Dnepropetrovsk.
Since the beginning of the twentieth century and today the city is an important center of metallurgical industry and machinery. Since the 1950's the city is the center for Aerospace and rocketry. The city is the main trading and industrial center of Eastern Ukraine.
There are 11 public and several private universities, National University.
Museums: Historic, Arts, Literature, etc.
Metro has operated since 1995. International airport.

Amazing "wet" flowers
Yes, autumn is also possible to see live field flowers. However, only in pictures. Olga Barabanova conceived to organized such an exhibition under the enigmatic title "Shades of bygone summer". 16 works of the new exhibition carried out in a rather original technique "ALLA PRIMA" (quick watercolor strokes on wet paper). Effect is just amazing! What can you say, better come and check it yourself.
Grand opening of the exhibition takes place on the 15th of October  at 18.00 in the coffee house "U Bekira" (53-a Kosmicheskaya Street), the admission is absolutely free. By the way, each painting can be purchased, prices vary from $ 100.

Dnepropetrovsk "Dnepr" took the 3rd  place in the rating of the richest football clubs in Ukraine under the version of the magazine "Focus". At the 1st  and 2nd  place settled FC Shakhtar Donetsk and Dynamo Kyiv respectively.
This is evidenced by the rating data, compiled by the magazine "Focus".
The richest club in Ukraine became FC Shakhtar Donetsk with an annual budget of $ 85 million. Following are Dynamo Kyiv ($ 60 million) and the Dnepropetrovsk "Dnepr" ($ 58 million). FC Metalist Kharkiv got the 4th  place in the rating with an annual budget of $ 30 million. Donetsk Metallurg ($ 25 million)  closes the list of leaders.

Dnepropetrovsk is proud of its metallurgical and metalworking plants which are essential for its economy. The history of the industry leaders has been thoroughly and completely studied. Smaller plants have had little success in this respect. Nowadays, the only one fact people remember about the first foundry is that it was once situated in Liteynaya (Founding) Street and belonged to the Zaslavskiye.

It is difficult to find Khersonskaya Street in the modern city. As all attempts to construct an entirely new city made it disappear. It’s the very area where the most famous house under number 3 is situated. However, it’s hard to say how long it will remain intact.

There were two cities with the name Ekaterinoslav. The first one was located in 1776 on the bank of Kilchen River in low-lying areas, and existed only 8 years. The place of where the former city was located is now flooded with waters of the Samara River. Some residents of the first Ekaterinoslav moved to the settlement Novoselitsya - now Novomoskovsk.

Embankment along the right bank of the Dnieper has a length of more than 23 km., that makes it the longest river in Europe.
Interestingly, until the early 1960's city turned away from the river: along the Dnieper were endless warehouses and small little factories, there were not places for recreation, and the river was used only as a transport artery.
However, the fact that the city was an industrial giant and has accumulated millions of tons of slag - metal, helped to create and strengthen the bank as a wide boulevard, to create a park area with the open expanses of water, as well as a west to east, along the entire city, a new wide avenue - the embankment.

Since the October Revolution (1917), Dnepropetrovsk has developed into one of the largest industrial cities of Ukraine. With the electric power from the cascade of hydroelectric plants on Dnepr river, iron ore from Krivoy Rog, manganese from Nikopol, coal from Donets Basin, gas from Shebelinka a huge iron and steel industry has grown up in Dnepropetrovsk city. Castings, plates, sheets, rails, tubes and wires are also produced in Dnepropetrovsk city.
Large engineering industries make electric locomotives, agricultural machinery, mining and metallurgical equipment, presses and other heavy machinery, as well as light industrial machinery and radio equipment in Dnepropetrovsk city. Coke-based chemicals, tires, plastics, paint, clothing, footwear, foodstuffs, and other materials are also produced in Dnepropetrovsk.

There still exist a lot of legends about the first stone building of the city, constructed approximately in 1787, which is said to be set up according to the project of Michail Kazakov or Ivan Starov. In conformity with the general plan of Yekaterinoslav city elaborated by Claude Gueroi  in 1786 “The palace where the Governor-general is supposed to live” was marked in another place – where present day Voroshilov and Fučík Streets are situated. The cannals must have been made from this building to the Dneiper. And the second residence, situated on the hill  and which had already been built, must have been connected to the Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral and the Dnieper with the help of underground passages. The duke was supposed to live in this palace, but it consisted only of one enormous hall, so considering this fact we can assume the palace was build for the meetings and balls to be held.
